Adobe Announces Open Source Generator Extension for Photoshop CC

If you happen to be a power user of Adobe Photoshop, you know that it is a very powerful and extensible tool for working with photos and graphics. Earlier this year, Adobe announced that it was putting a stop to perpetual licenses for its software, and requiring users to become Creative Cloud (CC) subscribers. Now, Adobe has announced availability of new Photoshop features for Creative Cloud members. An update to Photoshop CC (version 14.1) includes a new technology, Adobe Generator. It’s an open source platform built around a JavaScript API and “allows new workflows, especially for web designers, screen designers, and anyone who needs to extract image assets out of a Photoshop document,” according to Adobe.

According to the announement of Generator:

“Generator allows you to create image assets in real time as you work, eliminating the tedious steps of copying, slicing and exporting each layer manually, and saving you hours of time. Simply add a file extension to the name of your layer or layer group, and Photoshop will automatically create a JPG, PNG or GIF from the contents of that layer. If you make a change to that layer, the file is immediately updated. This means that you now have a folder of images that are always up-to-date with your Photoshop design.”

“Generator is a platform that can enable so much more, which is why we are excited to release the Generator technology platform and the image assets generation feature as open source projects. If you know JavaScript, it’s easy to modify the existing plug-ins or write your own.”

The Engine Co. has already used Generator to write a plug-in for its Loom gaming engine that allows game designers to change the UI of a game in Photoshop while the game is being played. You can check out a video detailing how it works here.

Adobe is smart to look at open source extensions as a way to make Photoshop more powerful. Just look at how GIMP’s open source status has helped it stay innovative over the years. You can find the Generator assets for download on GitHub now
